New Bus Services

posted 28 Jul 2016, 11:29 by BailisDowns Community   [ updated 8 Feb 2017, 05:03 ]

Update 08/02/17 After 6mths of waiting looks like we'll be waiting forever. Still no service.

Update 27/10

This is still not up and running despite having been announced in August with 2 articles in local newspapers. When it's up and running we'll let you know but so far it doesn't sound like it will be this year.

Details on September's new Bus Eireann Dublin bus service with the XN route going through Johnstown. Great news for commuters and those travelling.

High Grass

posted 11 Jul 2016, 00:48 by BailisDowns Community   [ updated 28 Jul 2016, 11:22 ]

When the grass in our estate grew high we had a plan in place with the intention of eventually cutting all of it. The grass and weeds opposite the shopping centre and adjacent to the bus stop are now past the point of a simple mower and will be costly for that Estate to tackle.

There's no sign that the residents living near it will attempt it but we do hope someone steps in to help soon.
UPDATE 27/07 the grass has now been cut and looks a lot better.

All the neighbouring estates have to fund their own grass cutting and not every household is willing to contribute. Some prefer to look after the areas opposite their homes by themselves believing its the cheaper option but then who does the common areas if this happens?

Update 15/12/16
A pop up Art shop has replaced High Style until Christmas.
Giovanni's Chip Shop closed, no reason given but rumors suggest it was closed down immediately without notice.

Update 14/11/16
The old florist shop is now 'TechWizzard' a smart device services and accessories shop.

Updated 27/10/16
High Style has now closed in the Johnstown Shopping Centre, the word is that it's not because of lack of business but for a better work life balance. We wish them well with their remaining Virginia outlet.

Tara Barbers also closed shop at the Athlumney Centre due to building issues but they have since opened another outlet in Bray whilst the Johnstown Shopping Centre outlet is doing very well.

Recently Cloud Nine closed its doors on 8th August and now 4 shops closed this year and there's still no new shops planning to open. This highlights our need to shop locally to keep these facilities alive.

There was a rumor some months back that Tesco might open in place of the old Spa shop In the Athlumney Centre but nothing has come of this. The old shops 'Bee Florists' and 'Pestle & Mortar' in the Johnstown Shopping Centre also have no new tenants.

On a brighter note, Tara Barbers in the Johnstown Shopping Centre opened up their second premise in the Athlumney Centre.

Johnstown Community Magazine

Update 27/10

The Second Bailis Downs edition launched on October 16th and within 10 days it reached it's first milestone of 150 unique readers and over 2000 page views.

The new webpage format is more successful and we'll soon discover if the other estates wish to collaborate on a Johnstown Magazine.

We're heading there by developing our own with a view to expanding the format to our neighbouring estates.

The second edition of our own Magazine will be out shortly.

Road Traffic

posted 7 Jul 2016, 00:13 by BailisDowns Community   [ updated 4 Sep 2016, 22:48 ]

Update 05/09/16

Road works recently opposite the Renault Garage on the Kentstown Road are complete where the sight lines for traffic have been improved.

Whilst Johnstown continues to be a bypass to Navan we are a through route for vehicles and we'll always see the impact at rush hours. At other times we're fairly quiet.

Over a year ago the junction at Kentstown Road and Metges Road was changed from Stop signs to traffic lights and the positioning looks like one day to become a roundabout.

The improved 'new' road entrance to St Stephens School has not happened although a few options were being discussed.

The Court Yard Bar

posted 7 Jul 2016, 00:11 by BailisDowns Community   [ updated 26 Nov 2016, 13:35 by Robin Marshall ]

25/11 Update: Fifty50 is now open above Taylors for evening meals.

14/11 Update: Bar meals have been on for just over a week and from reports it's going to be popular.

09/10 Update: Bar meals in the Lounge and the Fifty50 restaurant upstairs are due to open before the end of October.

21/08 Update: The Lounge bar is open every weekend with live music. Plans are in place to open the upstairs restaurant by The Fifty50 group.

03/08 Update: The new owners have made progress with new signage and renaming as "Taylors Johnstown". The lounge bar is set to open for occasions with live music.

27/07 Update:
The shrubs, hanging baskets and planting have been refreshed outside so we're hoping this will mean changes taking place inside too.

Operating under a reduced scale for quite a few years it was sold several months ago and we hope the new investors have plans to reopen the lounge and restaurant.

When we hear something definite we'll provide an update.

The Old Energie Gym

posted 7 Jul 2016, 00:09 by BailisDowns Community   [ updated 8 Feb 2017, 05:05 ]

08/02/17 Update: The sale of the Old Energie Gym has fallen through for the Lighthouse Church. It's back on the market
Petition started up by Residents asking for the Council to purchase it.

13/10 Update: The building has now been bought and rumor has it that it's the Light House Church.

09/10 Update: Someone has bought the building and rumor has it that it's either the 'Mr Price' shop or the 'Lighthouse Church'. Either way we hope it'll reopen as something and they clean up the building.

This was closed quite a few months ago and now boarded up. It's unlikely to reopen as a gym especially with competition from gyms on the far side of Navan.

Rumor has it that planning proposals have and continue to be made to find a use for it that incorporate a community facility space that could be hired to local groups.

When something happens we'll be delighted to let everyone know.

Community Centre

posted 7 Jul 2016, 00:05 by BailisDowns Community   [ updated 14 Jul 2016, 00:58 ]

With +7,000 residents we have no community building within Johnstown. If you were looking to hire a space you'd have to go to O'Briens Pub and Restaurant in Johnstown Village, The Ardboyne Hotel, Navan Rugby Club or further afield.

The St Stephens National School enlargement project was suppose to include some form of Facilities being made available to the local residents but nothing has come of this yet.

The Johnstown People's Park have a private enclosed green space with a basket ball court and plans are being proposed to create sport and recreational facilities although it is private land collectively managed by those neighbouring Estates of Spire View, Millbrook, Boyne View and The Priory. There's ongoing opposition to the proposals that have been made.

Childrens Playground

posted 7 Jul 2016, 00:00 by BailisDowns Community   [ updated 7 Jul 2016, 22:30 ]

Johnstown has around 4000 homes and not one playground. Our nearest is on the Boyne outside Navan. Although it's been mentioned over the last few years the Council has no plans to create something for Johnstown and we are not able to host something within our Estate.

Here's a Google Map showing the playgrounds within reasonable driving range. If we've missed one please let us know.
